Final Report: Rational Design of Anode Surface Chemistry in Microbial Fuel Cells for Improved Exoelectrogen Attachment and Electron Transfer Report Title The overall goal of this project is to determine how electrode surface chemistry can be rationally designed to decrease resistance and increase power density in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). We now have 9 peer-reviewed journal publications from this project on this topic, with more in preparation. In this project period we applied electrochemical oxidation of activated carbon anodes to demonstrate that increasing roughness, oxygen containing groups, and hydrophilicity all tended to improve anode performance. Novel alkane-thiol selfassembled monolayer (SAM) anodes were also tested to show that more hydrophilic, higher surface energy SAMs (trimethylamine and carboxylic) provided the best performance as anodes. 454 pyrosequencing demonstrated that beta and gamma Proteobacteria were dominant on these anodes. Custom activated carbon cathodes were constructed with varying characteristics to show that cathodes with largest amounts of carbon oxides and larger pores tended to have the best performance. Non-Pt group metals were also evaluated as cathode materials, and it was determined that materials derived from iron salt and aminoantipyrine (Fe-AAPyr) or mebendazole (Fe-MBZ) provided superior or comparable performance to Pt at higher pH values. We also initiated a novel set of experiments evaluating pili, motility, and electron transfer using Shewanella mutants. Microscale Microbial Fuel Cell Using 3d Bioanode with Electrospun Conductive Nanofibers and Micropillars
We report a novel microfluidic microbial fuel cell (μMFC) with an improved design of 3D bioanode. The device features a highly conductive, multilayered nanofibrous anode providing a porous scaffold structure favorable for microbial attachment, mass transfer, and electron collection. The anolyte and catholyte chambers have a small volume of 2 μL each, and are separated by a proton exchange membr...
متن کاملModeling of Multi-population Microbial Fuel and Electrolysis Cells Based on the Bioanode Potential Conditions
Microbial fuel cell and microbial electrolysis cell are two major types of microbial electrochemical cells. In the present study, we governed modeling of these systems by concentrating on the simulation of bioelectrochemical reactions in both biofilm and anolyte and considering the effect of pH on the microbial growth. The simulation of microbial fuel and electrolysis cells can be described by ...
متن کاملThree-dimensional carbon nanotube-textile anode for high-performance microbial fuel cells.
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) harness the metabolism of microorganisms, converting chemical energy into electrical energy. Anode performance is an important factor limiting the power density of MFCs for practical application. Improving the anode design is thus important for enhancing the MFC performance, but only a little development has been reported. Here, we describe a biocompatible, highly co...
متن کاملDesign of Highly Uniform Platinum and Palladium Nanoparticle Decoration on TiO2 Nanotube Arrays: An Efficient Anode to the Electro-Oxidation of Alcohols
We explore electro-catalytic properties of a system consisting of platinum and palladium nanoparticles dispersed over a nanotubular self-organized TiO2 matrix. These electrodes prepared by electroess and microemulsion of palladium and palladium nanoparticles on to TiO2 nanotubes, respectively. Titanium oxide nanotubes were fabricated by anodizing titanium foil in ethylene glycol (EG) fluoride-c...
متن کاملElectrocatalytic oxidation of glucose on the modified carbon paste electrode with sodalite nanozeolite for fuel cell
In this study, a sodalite nanozeolite was synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Following the morphology evolution of the sodalite nanozeolite in the SEM images illustrates the formation of the spherical particle with a size between 60 and 80 nm. Then, carbon paste electrode (CPE) was modified by sodalite nanozeolite and Ni2+ ions. Th...
